The APRDC (American Patriots Rudimental Drummers Club) held its First Annual International
Convention in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania on April 23-25, 2004.

CADRE Members in attendance included: Marcia Fattey, Doug Reynolds, Ed Jacko, Rick Hosie, Jim Bartholomew, Doug Kleinhans and Paul Mosley (APRDC Coordinator for APRDC - Canada). The concept for the APRDC was envisioned by John Flowers of Morgantown, PA. John – as most are undoubtedly aware – is an internationally-renown drummer, instructor and arranger as well as an original member of the groundbreaking 1958 Championship USA Air Force Drum Quartet. The stated purpose of the APRDC is to help preserve the art of rudimental drumming. Its goal is to provide fellowship and time for drummers to get together and “DRUM”.

This first APRDC gathering was a literal “Who’s Who” of the USA drummers’ community - representing several eras of the 20th century drum corps scene right up to the present.

The program consisted of:
Friday night:
- Social “mixer” and rehearsal for those performing on Saturday
Saturday:
- Individual and ensemble performances
- Banquet
- 1st Inductees into the APRDC Hall of Fame: John S. Pratt, Danny Raymond Sr., John Dowlan and Duke Terreri
Sunday morning:
- Breakfast and departure

Friday was a great opportunity to meet old friends and make new acquaintances. The atmosphere in the drummers’ warm-up room was electric; everyone was having a great time; everyone was taking-in the many high level performances; it was one of those “you had to be there” events. Simply outstanding!

Saturday’s program featured more than 20 superb performances:

1. Bill Boerner (ex-NY Skyliners; 78 years of age) started everything off with some great rope drumming – I mean great rope drumming (not just great-for-78)!

2. Dick Filkins played a superb solo – “flamtastic” stuff…

3. CADRE Rope Drum I&E Ensemble (Ed Jacko, Rick Hosie, Doug Kleinhans and Paul Mosley) performed their new 2004 I&E program: “Songs of Peace and Freedom”.

4. John Flowers played a new, original rope drum solo. Terrific stuff, John.

5. Nick Attanasio and Don Friesing (original Members of the Sons of Liberty Fife and Drum Corps – Brooklyn, NYC) played a bass & snare rope drum duet. What a historic moment! Great work, guys!

6. Doug Reynolds (CADRE/APRDC) played a new solo work. Outstanding!

7. The NYDA (New York Drummers’ Association) played their 2003 2nd place I&E performance work consisting of classic drum corps solos (Fattey, Hosie, Mosley, Jacko, Reynolds, McGrath, Kleinhans). This was a lot of fun. Thank you, Bill McGrath.

8. Chew Gernandt played new solo works on hi-tension and rope tension snare drums. Unbelievable chops.

9. APRDC/CADRE Duet (Kleinhans & Mosley) played a Kleinhans composition: “Kickin”

10. The 2004 CADRE I&E competition ensemble (Mosley, Jacko, and Fattey) played its new performance piece for the first time in public.

11. Skyliner drummers (Fontana & Murray) – 2003 I&E Champions – played their duet & trio I&E works. In addition, Jack Murray played an unbelievable, blazing snare solo. Man, these guys drum up a storm! See you in September…

12. Members of the original Air Force Drum Line (Bitner, Bosworth, Ehrhard, Filkins, Flowers, Landis, Mojica and Zarfoss) played some of the drum solos that made their reputation in the 50s and 60s as one of the great all-time rudimental ensembles. Another historic moment

13. Bill McGrath (NYDA Founder and APRDC Chapter 4 Coordinator) played one of his competition solos. Bill, you sounded better than ever!

14. John Neurohr (Skyliners Alumni & former DCA champion) played a snare solo. Neat stuff!

15. Marcia Fattey & Doug Reynolds played a new competition duet written by Marcia. Really interesting new material, Marcia!

16. Cullen Triner – Camp Chase Fife & Drum Corps (with whom CADRE performed at the Columbus OH PAS concert in 2002) – played an original solo “Disjunction Funktion”. Thanks for a copy of your score, Cullen. Powerful drumming!

17. Skee Derr (member of the 2002 Patriot’s I&E ensemble) played a solo snare composition. Skee, you’re still one of the best anywhere.

18. APRDC/CADRE Quintet (Gernandt, Flowers, Fattey, Jacko & Mosley) played John Flowers’ “ An American Rudimental Tribute to Alfons Grieder”.

19. The Mason Dixon Line Drum Ensemble (Biscotti, Hentschel, Howley, Knauer, D. Magsamen, L. Magsamen, Mojica & Reely) performed a unique composition featuring marching snares, cymbals, rudi-bass, roto toms and drum kit. Great new sound!

20.
Ken Mazur (DCI Champ ’73) gave 2 virtuoso “rudimental” drum-kit performances with electronic accompaniment. Strong rhythmic chops, Ken. Wonderful stuff.

Last, but certainly not least…

Danny Raymond Jr. (see bio that follows) – with the assistance of Jack Lawton on rudi bass -
gave an unbelievable snare drum presentation. Danny managed to weave many elements
together that provided an insightful rudimental tapestry:

Danny provided a broad, historical context for the many rudimental influences that
positively affected his father and, how he (Danny Jr.) has also been helped by people
from many, diverse rudimental perspectives. He spoke about how these influences
appear in his writing and playing.

He blended stories together to illustrate that we are all responsible for building the
rudimental tradition. No one does it alone. All influences are far reaching and profound
in ways we can never imagine. Danny’s presentation was a poignant tribute to his father
- Danny Raymond Sr.

Danny played several selections. He was brought up in the modern rudimental era and
has incredible speed, a subtle “touch” coupled with a great rudimental “feel” for the
drum.

Danny seeing and hearing you play was an inspiration.

Finally…

In 2004, the APRDC has instituted its Hall of Fame. This year’s HOF Inductees were honored through spoken tributes and performances of their music:

John S. Pratt
Paul Mosley played “Jack” Pratt’s “Spasmodic Permutations”.

A CADRE quartet (Jacko, Mosley, Hosie & Kleinhans) played Jack’s “Tribute to Dr. Berger”

John Dowlan
The 1958 US Air Force Drum Quartet played their legendary, championship composition (Filkins, Flowers, Bosworth & Bitner).

Danny Raymond Sr.
Danny Jr. played a tribute-solo that incorporated one of his father’s favorite “riffs”.

Duke Terreri
The massed drums – 27 snares and 3 bass drums – played Duke’s “Liverpoole” and “ Prussia Variations”.

The evening ended with an encore massed drum performance of:
Downfall of Paris (traditional)
The Devil’s Flute (Parks)
Liverpoole (Terreri)
Prussia Variation (Terreri)
Thunder & Lightning (Westhall)

Thanks to Barbara and John Flowers, their volunteers and sponsors for creating this opportunity for us – a truly first-class event.
