CADRE
Performs at the 1st Annual
Mississauga Marathon
By Paul Mosley
Sunday morning, May 16th marked the 1st annual Mississauga
Marathon
The CADRE-Toronto Heritage Hands Drum Club I&E Groups (Jacko, Gomez, Summers,
Fattey, Hosie, Kelly, Henderson & Mosley) were invited to provide “motivational
entertainment” for the participating runners.
The performance spanned over 3 hours from about 8:30 - 9:00am (from the first
runner) to after the noon hour when most of the runners had passed.
We were stationed at a point where the runners would see and hear us on the
1st leg of the course and then again as they doubled-back.

Our
repertoire consisted of our warm-up exercises, both of the CADRE competition
routines (rope drum & modern drum), plus various drum solos and
street beats. At times, we cycled drummers through the program to provide
a respite for players - yet maintain a minimum of 4 drummers at all
times for the runners. Most of the time, all drummers played – with
only a couple of minutes between drumming selections. We wanted to
make sure that we played for all the runners!
We had a lot of fun. We really enjoyed drumming at this event. What a terrific
feeling! Many runners called-out to let us know they appreciated the motivating
sound of the drums. A real communication developed between the runners and
our drummers.
As far as we understand, this is one of the first – if not the first – times
that a rudimental drum group has performed at this type of athletic competition.
The concept certainly seemed to work!
Before, during and after the race, the event organizers were extremely helpful.
Their organizational and communication skills made everything easy for us.
CADRE thanks the Landmark Sports Group – in particular Joe Falconi -
for their support and also for their kind CADRE invitation to perform at next
year’s event – May 15, 2005.
