By
Paul Mosley, Tom Foote & Doug Kleinhans
Our sincere
thanks to John Beck Head of Percussion at the Eastman School
of Music for inviting us to participate in this years Rudimental
Outreach Program. This event was designed to create awareness and interest
for rudimental drumming among Rochester-area high school and college students.
A cross-section of students plus parents attended and experienced
a wide variety of rudimental styles i.e. modern, competitive-level, ensemble
drumming (CADRE I&E 2003 program), ancient-to-modern rope drumming
(CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble), classical rudimental drumming from the 60s
& 70s (NYDA I&E 2003 Ensemble program) and modern pipe band drumming
(Peel Regional Pipe Band). All drummers assembled for a massed-drums finale
consisting of breaking down the long roll and the classic 3 Camps.

Drums at the 1st York Lions Drum Corps Reunion
by Paul Mosley
It was beautiful, sunny day! The day after Hurricane Isabels
storm passed through Toronto brought perfect weather for a drum corps
get-together. York Lions Drum Corps held its first reunion on Saturday,
November 20th at the Royal Canadian Legion, Branch 344 in Toronto.
In performance were the Toronto Optimist Alumni Drum Corps and the Hamilton
Firefighters Drum Corps plus the CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble and the
CADRE Heritage Hands-Toronto I&E Ensemble.
York Lions Alumni officials Pat Maloney and Tom Stelling
arranged the on-site logistics for CADREs morning rehearsals, and
provided great hospitality throughout the day.
The CADRE Heritage Hands-Toronto I&E Ensemble started things off in
the afternoon with a performance of the program presented at the DCA Individual
& Ensemble Championships in Scranton, PA last Labor Day weekend. Drummers
were Ed Jacko, Gary Gomez, Greg Evans, Rick Hosie, Paul Kelly and Paul
Mosley.
The CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble then played several traditional selections
accompanied by Brent MacLaren on fife - with introductory comments by
Fred Johnson. Drummers were Fred Johnson, Gerrie Leebody, Doug Kleinhans,
Ed Jacko, Rick Hosie, Paul Kelly and Paul Mosley.
Everyone loved the rope drums!
Rope drums provide the unique, authentic sound - plus a visual, theatrical
quality necessary for fife & drum renditions. Canadian audiences
dont have many opportunities to hear the big drums,
so accordingly, the crowd response was terrific!
It was great making new friends and renewing old acquaintances from the
York Lions, Hamilton Firefighters and the Toronto Optimists (spending
some time with Lorne Ferrazzutti - Toronto Optimists original drum
instructor was a special part of our day).
CADRE thanks the York Lions Drum Corps Alumni for the kind invitation
to perform at their 1st reunion and wishes them the best of luck in all
future endeavors.

Entry into DCA I&E Competition
Scranton PA, August 30, 2003
by Paul Mosley
On Saturday, August 30, 2003, the CADRE Heritage Hands Club Toronto entered
into DCA Individual & Ensemble competition for the first time.
For its first foray into the individuals world, the group
placed a respectable 5th (score of 89) in an extremely high quality group
of competitors. A complete rundown of scores is available at http://www.dcacorps.org/scores.html
Playing Members were: Paul Kelly, Rick Hosie, Ed Jacko, Greg Evans, Gary
Gomez and Paul Mosley and represented corps affiliations from Canadas
Marching Ambassadors, Rochester Crusaders and Kingston Grenadiers.
The project began last April with an on-line collaboration to create the
challenging drum program titled: Pailfull of Kittens using
Finale 2003 (3-part score: bass drum, rudi bass & snare)
"Pailfull of Kittens" is an edited compilation of::Just Groovin'
- by Doug Kleinhans (dedicated to Fred Johnson)
Cookin' with Cos - by Paul Mosley (dedicated to Cos Capone)
Squish - by Gerry Hemsley (dedicated to Fred Johnson)
5/4 for Flowers - by Paul Mosley (dedicated to John Flowers) Edits
were made by Mosley, Hemsley & Kleinhans in collaboration.
Anyone wishing to receive a copy of the score, please contact Paul Mosley
at pmdm@rogers.com. Please
specify either hard copy or .PDF file and provide electronic or surface
mail coordinates.
Playing Members (mainly Toronto-based + Ottawa / Lindsay) were
recruited in late May / June. Group membership subsequently was
settled and entered as a sextet in the Membrane Percussion Ensemble
category (some initially-selected drummers had to bow out due to health,
business or personal reasons i.e. Peter Crawford, Gerry Hemsley, Doug
Kleinhans and Jason Parent). As there was limited time to prepare,
the focus was to field a tight unit composed of drummers who could work
on their own to learn the drum parts and show up at a few rehearsals
vs. practices.
A half-dozen rehearsals were held and the project culminated with the
DCA I&E weekend in August.
It was a good learning experience for everyone. Some Members had
previously competed in an I&E environment, some had not. We
had an opportunity to assess ourselves against the competition and to
get a better idea of what we have to do to improve in the future.
CADRE, Heritage Hands - Toronto plans to enter next years DCA I&E
competition with a new drum repertoire. Although a Toronto-based
activity for rehearsals and playing member selection, anyone is welcome
to play in the 2004 CADRE DCA I&E group. The criteria for playing
members are an ability to:
- Learn
the drum scores on your own with a minimum of personal assistance.
- Commit
to the completion of the project (barring any unforeseen issues which
sometimes occur).
- Attend
rehearsals in Toronto.
- Perform
at a high level so that get-togethers are rehearsals vs.
practices.
- Either
own, or have access to, a drum in good condition. The CADRE, Heritage
Hands - Toronto I&E group will also be performing:September 20,
2003 in Toronto, Ontario at the York Lions Reunion (details to follow
ASAP). Also in performance will be the CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble*
that performed at last years G.A.S. Reunion (Great Alliance of
Seniors) in New Jersey.
November
15, 2003 in Hamilton, Ontario at this years CADRE Shake Also
in performance will be the CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble and the CADRE Performance
Drumline that played at the November, 2002 PAS Convention in Columbus,
Ohio.
The
CADRE Rope Drum Ensemble will be part of a larger group which will perform
at the 2004 G.A.S. - April 30, May 1 & 2 - in Hamilton, Ontario, sponsored
by the Hamilton Firefighters.
Anyone
wishing information on how to participate in this group should contact
either Paul Mosley (pmdm@rogers.com)
or Fred Johnson (johnson@frontenac.net).
Were all looking forward to a successful 2004 DCA I&E
performance!

News
from Québec City!
by
André Lacroix
Again this
year the Québec City Drum Club will be participating at a few local
summer activities. This is a good opportunity for the club to be
known locally and eventually get interested people involved in the group.
Moreover, for the most part, the club is getting paid for its participation
to these activities, thus the current members are then in a position to
recover, at least in part, their monetary investment in the group.
Besides these activities, we will be in Montréal on August 16th
for a standing show along with the Ottawa and Montréal drum clubs,
and will host a mini shake here in Québec City on the 6th of September.
Here is an overview of what is coming up for us in the month of August:
Sunday 3rd, 1:30 p.m, parade at Festival des Montgolfières de
Saint-Jean-Chrysostome (Hot Air Balloon Festival) . This is located
on the south shore of the
St.Lawrence River, almost facing Québec. This is the closing
activity of this festival,a 2 kilometer parade that well do for
the first time.It is reported that last years parade drew several
thousand people. For this occasion,we have chosen to play Crazy Army,
a combination of Sky-Cabs street beats, and a closer with Reilly Raiders
drum solo.
Wednesday 6th, 8:15 p.m., the opening parade at Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France
and usually a very big crowd. Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France
is a rememberance feast that brings you back to the very beginning of
Québec when founded in 1608. Departure of the parade
is at Place-George V,and then Grande-Allée avenue and ending at
Château Frontenac on St.Louis street.
Saturday 9th, 5:30 p.m, another Fêtes de la Nouvelle-France parade,
departure from the Concord hotel and ending at Parc Montmorency via Grande-Allée
avenue,and St.Louis street.
Sunday 10th, 1:00 p.m, this is the closing parade, again at Fêtes
de la Nouvelle-France. Departure at Place dYouville via St.Jean
street and Côte de la Fabrique, ending at Montmorency Park.
For the three above parades,we usually play some old French drumming as
it is more in the spirit of the events.
Saturday 16th, 9:00 p.m, Championat provincial (Provincial Drum and Bugle
Corps championships) in Montréal.For this occasion,we join the
Ottawa and Montréal Drum Clubs for a standing drum show.
Saturday September 6th, a mini shake in Québec City for the
pleasure of drumming with some friends, especially the Ottawa and Montréal
Drum Clubs, as well as other interested drummers. For this occasion,
we plan a public performance in Old Québec at the end of the day.Voici
la liste des activités officielles des Tambours de Québec
pour le mois d'août 2003:

Hi
Everyone
Tambours de Québec (The Québec City Drum
Club) is pleased to announce that
we will be playing again this year at the Québec City Winter Carnival's
Evening Ball at the Château Frontenac.
Besides being a great place for drumming, this is also a good opportunity
for the club to bring in some cash flow for the various investments that
the Club plans to do in the future. So,everything goes pretty well for
us at
this time.Happy Carnival to all.
André
Salut

Fife
& Drum Project
CADRE is
in the final stages of completing a distribution package that will include
approximately 16 fife & drum tunes which will include fife music scores
plus snare and rudimental bass parts. We have been working with
Nick Attanasio on the selection of some tunes which he has recommended
as a group of his favourites. Brent McLaren from Perth Ontario has
reviewed the fife parts and is making his selection recommendations also.
Some tunes will reflect historical writings and old favourite drum solos
such as The Three Camps, Downfall of Paris, Old Dan Tucker, British
Grenadiers etc. Other tunes will reflect a public performance requirement
such as "The Girl I Left Behind Me", "Kingdom Coming"
etc.
Nick Attanasio has developed a paper entitled "Symbols for Rudimental
Bass Drumming" which describe the various hand and arm movements
that are typical for this art form. Copies will be sent next
week to Ottawa, Quebec City, Hamilton and Toronto. The symbols will
be included in the final musical scores. For further information
please contact Fred Johnson. johnson@frontenac.net

Western
Tech Grads Reunite After 50 Years!
by
Tom Mellors
Fifty years
after its heyday, Western Trumpet Band members reunited to perform at
the Western Technical-Commercial School's 75th anniversary reunion. The
performance took place Friday May 16th, as part of the school's weekend
anniversary festivities. About 20 members of the award-winning band combined
with members of the 2nd Signals Regiment Band for a 15 minute performance
in the school auditorium. Over the previous four months, the Western old
timers renewed friendships at practices leading up to the reunion event.
The trumpet band won several first place honors at the
Waterloo Band Festivals in the fifties, as well as placing first in many
street parades.

Back
row and from left to right are Lorne Ferriazzutti, Chet Warchol,
Tom Mellors,
John Hozak, Norm Jackson and in the front Orton Beaumont and Gary Chick.
